Marketing generalist for tech startups
I’ve worked with tech startups in both consulting capacity (clients of Boguslavsky & Co), and also as in-house marketer, when I’ve held Head of Marketing / Digital Marketing Manager roles so I do possess some insights and experience when it comes to what the first marketing hire should look like for a tech startup.
A marketing generalist is a much better bet than a specialist when it comes to your first marketing hire. You need someone who has experience in doing a little bit of everything (strategy, content, email, running ads, PR, copywriting). You need someone who is well versed in content marketing, social media, performance marketing, and search.
You need someone who can understand how to combine all of these specialist marketing areas as part of an overall, big picture, marketing strategy. Who understands how to start, where to start, which areas to experiment with, the long term picture planning along with getting those early easy wins.
Once you get this right, that is when you start to hire specialists so you can scale your startup.
